Papua New Guinea Launches New Digital ID System to Modernize Services
Date: May 7, 2025
Port Moresby — In a major step toward digital transformation, the Government of Papua New Guinea has officially launched a nationwide Digital ID System aimed at improving the delivery of public services and promoting transparency across sectors.
Prime Minister James Marape announced the initiative during a press conference held at the National Parliament, calling it a “historic leap into a smarter, more efficient future for our nation.”
Why a Digital ID System?
The new system is designed to assign each citizen a unique digital identification number, simplifying the process of accessing essential services such as healthcare, education, banking, and government subsidies.
According to the Department of Information and Communication Technology (DICT), the system will help reduce fraud, eliminate duplicate records, and enhance data integrity.
“For too long, our systems have been slow and paper-based. This will finally bring accountability and access to the people, especially those in remote areas,” said DICT Secretary Steven Matainaho.
Rollout Plan
The digital ID registration process will begin in urban centers like Port Moresby, Lae, and Mt. Hagen before expanding to rural districts by the end of 2025. Citizens can register at local government offices or through mobile registration units being deployed to underserved areas.
Benefits for Citizens
- Faster access to public services
- Reduced paperwork and bureaucracy
- Improved government planning through accurate data
- Enhanced security and fraud protection
Privacy and Security Concerns
While the government assures citizens that personal data will be protected through encrypted servers and strict privacy laws, some advocacy groups have raised concerns over potential misuse. The Prime Minister has promised that a new oversight committee will be established to address any data protection violations.
Looking Ahead
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in PNG’s digital future. By adopting modern identity management tools, the government aims to foster economic growth, reduce inequality, and support development goals.
